Whole30 - not for me.

Source
I am 2 weeks into the Whole30 and I am throwing in the towel. It's just not for me. I am feeling craptastic and it seems to be getting worse.

I don't have the never-ending energy, it's actually the opposite. All I want to do is sleep. I wake up exhausted even though I got 7-8 hours of mostly uninterrupted sleep.

My workouts seem harder, especially running. Recently, I ran 4 miles on the treadmill and even though I am still running at my usual pace, it seems as though I am having to put forth twice as much energy to get it done.

I feel like a failure but I need to do what's best for me. As a person with a history of ED, it's not wise to cut out an entire food group. It's too easy to become obsessed with every morsel of food that is entering my body.

I need to be healthy, not just for myself but also my family. Prior to the Whole30, I had pretty healthy eating habits. I am going to return to that but I am cutting dairy. I really think dairy is the cause of my gastrointestinal issues. I was lactose intolerant as a baby, so maybe I never outgrew the sensitivity.

I need to stop worrying about what other people are doing and focus on myself. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for someone else. Personally, as a runner, I think my body needs the carbs.

On a happier note. I am at 51% of my fundraising goal! A H-U-G-E thanks to Tiffany, Tony, Rana and Trevor. Thank you for your donations!!

Today I am looking at 10 miles. Hopefully, I'll be able to do a post about that later on today.

  2. Everyone is different. It takes time to find the balance that is right for you. Good for you for taking the time to try something new!

  3. I don't even know the "rules" of Whole30. I love my whole grain carbs (and even some not-so-whole-grain carbs!). I did Atkins ages ago and when I went off it I felt like I was on speed - I had SO much more energy when I went back to eating carbs. Sounds like you are making the right choice for you.

  6. I am Paleo and really have to remind myself to get in the carbs to keep my energy levels up - it can be tough. Like you said, whole30 is not for everyone! I made it 2 days and caved because I just wanted a freakin cup of coffee with 1 tablespoon of creamer! Haha!

    1. I made some paleo creamer and that has helped a lot but I still crave my old sugary creamer, lol

  7. I do know that everybody feels pretty crappy when they start the whole 30, but I think 2 weeks is excessive. Of course as a vegan who loves her grains, I'm like the anti-paleo, but I do try to eat pretty clean.

I totally agree that you need to do what is right for you. If you eat fresh whole foods, avoid processed food and sugar, you be fine and healthy.

  8. I don't think diets should be overly complicated - just eat things with as many benefits as possible, stay hydrated and stay balanced. Sounds like what you were doing was messing with that balance!

    1. Good point about the balance. I feel a lot better today after eating some carbs before my run.

  9. Good for you. There is no reason to think of this as a failure. You tried something different in your diet to see if it would help, and it didn't. It sounds like it just didn't address your needs. Our bodies respond to the right mix of fuel, and I think what's 'right' is different for everyone. I hope you find a good balance soon!

  10. Good for you! Do what's right for you - there is no perfect fit or magic bullet for everyone.

  11. I came across your blog thru the 13 in 2013 facebook group and then found this post. I have struggled with ED in the past and honestly still do nice to know I am not the only one out there trying to get healthy the right way and still have some setbacks.... I have hard time counting calories and not wanting to cut to much.
